The Ancient Art of Moon Gardening
As handed down by
R.John Harris ~ Head Gardener

and John Harris's 2012 Moon Gardening Calendar
Hello! My name is Lisa, and this is my web site. This photo is me with a tray of the Broad Beans from the seeds which Mr. Harris kindly had sent to me from the UK seed company Plants of Distinction. I put them in one of the raised beds in my new garden just outside of my greenhouse, and planted them according to the directions of the Head Gardener, 6 inches apart in double rows, so they will be well pollinated.
When you simply do not have room in your garden for deep-trench beds, or if you do not want to exert the effort to dig them, then do as John Harris suggests...that is just make mini-trench beds. The point of the trench beds is simply to provide your seeds and plants soil as nutritious as you can make it, soft, well-dug open soil for the plants' roots to spread and grow.

This is a picture of my garden on July 18, 2009. The tomatoes are growing well despite having been frostbitten on the 12th of June. The beans are all in flower now, and there is a photo album of my garden, greenhouse tomatoes and John's greenhouse tomaotes, my sweet peas and his along with various other pictures on the Photo Album page of this web siet

"The Moon's quarters are referred to as the First, Second, Third and Fourth Quarters, and you will also find them referred to as New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon and Last Quarter. The planting of seeds in the proper quarter of the moon's life, the pruning of trees, the fertilizing of plants, and the weeding of the garden all according to the influences of the Moon, when observed and practiced correctly, will prove the validity of this gardening method to the gardener year after year, by producing the strongest, most productive vegetables and flowers. One's garden and indeed one's life takes on a deeper dimension, when one follows the Moon's cycles. When you realize the sequences of her phases and plan your work and life accordingly, you learn the truth of the belief that within the confines of the Moon's constant change, there lies complete certainty. The only thing one can ever count on is, indeed, change. " John Harris, 2008

When we live and work according to the ebb and flow of the moon's influence, we will see balance and productivity instead of the inevitable problems which come when we try to push our influence upon the garden, and indeed, upon the Earth. When you get right down to it, the most important thing of all is to enjoy the simple things and you'll find happiness, and above all, to help other people. That's what life is all about, that's the most important thing.
John Harris, in a telephone conversation in August, 2004.
When you wish to plant Sweet Peas, you must take care care to start them in the greenhouse. Sweet Peas like cool weather to germinate, so the unheated greenhouse will work to their advantage. (in Colorado I started them in my heated greenhouse on the floor) Then, when the Sweet Peas are showing their second set of true leaves, take care to snip the new growth which follows. This does not hurt the plant at all, and in fact will produce new shoots from the bottom, so instead of one long vine, you will have several vines. Repeat this snipping off of new growth on the new shoots too, should the weather delay you from planting them out. Harden them off for several days, keeping your cold frame open at night after the first few nights, and plant them out in early April and support them on wigwams or long trellises made from twine supported by long length of bamboo. (in Colorado I will plant out according to the weather, probably in mid-May).John Harris in phone conversation in February, 2007.
